X-Men Mutants endowed with sacred powers, the X-Men are trained by Professor Xavier, aka Professor X (Patrick Stewart, the same one who commanded the Star Trek starship Enterprise), to unwillingly protect the humans against the super -evil forces controlled by Magneto (Ian McKellen) who has vowed to destroy humanity. Beyond the warnings against the challenge of adapting to the cinema a series as cult as that created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963, the young director Bryan Singer, neophyte comic book reader, tackled the project without batting an eyelid. In the opinion of fans and the people of Marvel themselves, he has done his job very honorably, making a tragic and psychological science fiction film, which interest certainly does not lie in the visual aspects and the action scenes. The relationships between the characters and their intimate motivations are the secret to the success of this "X-Men" prized by moviegoers. The staging is sober and elegant, the superheroes are all camped by very motivated actors (Famke Janssen persists and signs), and the most disturbing of them is of course »r Hugh Jackman who makes the character of Wolverine a John Carpenter hero. We will also appreciate the performance of the talented Anna Paquin (Rogue) Oscar winner in 1992 for having taken "The Piano Lesson" by Jane Campion. X-Men 2 Hatred between humans and mutants escalates after the President of the United States narrowly escapes a mutant bombing. As the X-Men set out to find the culprit, the anti-mutant movement sets out to attack Professor Xavier's school. After having magnificently illustrated himself at the controls of "X-Men", the young Bryan Singer continued on his path by signing at the beginning of 2003 a second episode almost as successful as the previous one. The characters having already been presented, the filmmaker focused on the action, thus making a playful film while maintaining a certain consistency with the first part. The X-Men are joined by new partners including the mysterious Diablo (the excellent Alan Cumming), but also young Pyro and Iceberg. While giving pride of place to action and special effects (the opening scene is particularly impressive), Bryan Singer explores the psychology of his characters and his high-tech film stands out above all as a deeply human tragedy. X-Men 3: The Final Showdown Upon the announcement of the discovery of a vaccine that could allow mutants to become full humans (without powers), tension mounts between Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen). While the latter raises an army to counter the government's plans, Xavier tries to prevent Jean Gray (Famke Janssen), returned from the beyond, from eradicating the criminal impulses emanating from his unconscious ... Bryan Singer s 'having flown to direct Superman Returns, it was finally to Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon) that was entrusted in 2005 with the staging of the last part of the X-Men trilogy. If the elements put in place in the first episodes have been respected, the philosophical dimension and humanism have unfortunately given way to non-stop action. By referring to the original comic book, and in particular to the saga of the Black Phoenix, the senarists Zack Penn and Simon Kinberg (xXx 2, Mr And Mrs Smith) have condensed in the story far too much information for a film of one hour forty five. The characters, with the exception of Wolverine, Tornado, and Magneto, are singularly underutilized, sacrificed in the name of efficiency and pace. The sequences of bravery follow one another without respite, never leaving the spectator a chance to surrender to the emotion aroused by the drama of this often tragic episode. Nothing to be ashamed of however: Brett Ratner, failing an inspired staging, signs honorable entertainment and guarantees the show. Warning !
