On the fictional island of Orphalese, Almitra, an eight-year-old girl, meets Mustafa, a political prisoner under house arrest. Against all expectations, this meeting turns into friendship. That same day, the authorities informed Mustapha of his release. Guards are in charge of escorting him immediately to the boat which will bring him back to his native country. On his way, Mustafa shares his poems and his outlook on life with the inhabitants of Orphalese. Almitra, who follows him discreetly, represents these words to himself in visually dazzling dreamlike sequences. But when she realizes that the guards' intentions are much less noble than advertised, she does everything she can to help her friend. Will she manage to save him?
