bajirao mastani

India, early 18th century. The court of Hindu Marathi King Chhatrapati Shahu needs a new Peshwa, the equivalent of the 1st Minister. The young Bajirao, an emeritus warrior with great spiritual wisdom, is chosen. A few years later, during one of his travels, Bajirao meets Mastani, daughter of the Hindu Rajput king Chhatrasal and his Persian Muslim wife Ruhani Bai. She asks him for help in fighting the Muslim invader who is threatening their fort. Bajirao, impressed by his warrior qualities, agrees to help him and they manage to defeat the enemies. Chhatrasal, grateful, insists that Bajirao spend Holi (the festival of colors) with them in Bundelkhand. Mastani and Bajirao fall in love. He offers her his dagger, unaware of the symbol of marriage this represents for the Bundelkhand Rajput. Bajirao leaves for Pune, where Kashi Bai, his devoted wife who was looking forward to him, welcomes him. Mastani, determined to follow her heart, arrives in Pune. In the midst of the reconquest of India, Bajirao will face the Mughals, then in full disintegration ... but will the Peshwa, soon torn by two loves, resist the assaults of the heart and against the reason of state?
